Leftover Marketing Budget in December 2026? What Video You Can Still Produce Before 31 December

Leftover Marketing Budget in December 2026? What Video You Can Still Produce Before 31 December

Finance can count two things before Thursday 31 December 2026: work delivered and money paid. We date both, from our published production windows and the federal rule on prepaid expenses, and say where our own offer is the wrong answer.

Can you still spend leftover marketing budget on video in December 2026?

Yes, if you book soon. As of 5 October 2026, Dream Aspect's published production times on its video marketing and CGI pages mean a live-action shoot on 14–17 December 2026 delivers files by Christmas Eve, and simple 2D animation can start as late as 19–22 December. At published starting prices, $10,000 buys up to three live-action shoots at $3,000 each, or up to 28 UGC videos at $350 each.

The December 2026 deadlines at a glance:

  • Live-action shoot: shoot by 14–17 December.
  • Simple 2D animation: start by 19–22 December.
  • Moderate 2D or basic 3D: start by 14–19 December.
  • Complex 3D CGI: start by 24 November, and no later than 10 December.

Two things can move every one of these dates earlier. First, they are dates for receiving files, not for posting them, so content that has to be live before Christmas needs an earlier start. Second, they count calendar days. If your agency counts working days only, the last live-action shoot for Christmas Eve moves to 10–15 December. For posting dates by holiday, see the December holiday content calendar.

What counts as "spent" before 31 December?

A leftover marketing budget is money that has to be used by 31 December or it is lost. But "used" can mean three different things, and your finance team decides which one counts. Ask before you book, because each answer sets a different deadline:

  • Delivery: the video has to arrive by 31 December, so the production deadlines decide what you can buy.
  • Invoice date: the agency's invoice has to be dated 2026, so ask whether it invoices at booking, on the shoot day or at delivery.
  • Payment: the money has to leave your account by 31 December, which makes a prepayment possible.

One trap to know about: budget rules are set inside your company, but tax follows federal rules. A December payment that closes this year's budget may still not be a 2026 tax deduction.

What video can still be delivered before 31 December 2026?

Live action, 2D animation and most 3D can still be delivered by Christmas Eve 2026 if production starts on time. We worked out each deadline by counting back from Thursday 24 December, the day before the federal Christmas holiday, using the production times Dream Aspect publishes on its video marketing and CGI pages. For live action, the video marketing page says "Full content delivery typically takes 7-10 days after the content shoot day."

  • Live-action shoot takes 7–10 days after the shoot day, so shoot by 14–17 December.
  • Simple 2D animation of 7–12 seconds takes 2–5 days, so start by 19–22 December.
  • Moderate 2D or basic 3D takes 5–10 days, so start by 14–19 December. For a worked example, see the SaaS year-in-review video timeline.
  • Complex 3D or VFX takes 2 weeks to a month, so start by 24 November, and no later than 10 December.

The earlier date in each range is the safe one. If you need files by 31 December instead, add a week to each start, or 30 November to 17 December for complex 3D. That only works if the team keeps working through Christmas week, which none of Dream Aspect's pages promises, so plan on Christmas Eve. For festive scenes made without a set, see the Christmas CGI product video brief dates.

What moves the deadlines earlier?

Three things sit outside the production times, and each one takes days off your December schedule:

  • Booking: the live-action clock starts on the shoot day, not the day you book, and Dream Aspect's pages don't say how far ahead to book.
  • Approval: the dates are for finished files, not a running campaign, so your sign-off and any paid cutdowns come after.
  • Revisions: the video marketing page promises "full content delivery" without saying whether that includes a revision round.

UGC has no deadline here. Dream Aspect's UGC page gives two timelines, "14 to 30 days" and "as short as 7 days", so get any UGC delivery date in writing before you rely on it.

What is the fastest video to produce before the year ends?

Simple 2D animation is the fastest video format to produce before year end. A 7–12-second piece takes about 2–5 days, according to Dream Aspect's CGI page, so it can start as late as 19–22 December 2026 and still arrive by Christmas Eve. Count the days you have from the shoot day or approved brief, not from today, then use this rule:

  • Under two weeks: complex 3D is out.
  • Under ten days: live action only works if everything runs at full speed.
  • Under five days: only simple 2D is left.

With less than a week left, a new production usually isn't the best use of the money. Re-editing footage you already own is faster and carries less risk. For what to post after the last shipping day, see the post-Christmas content plan.

How much video does $10,000 buy?

At Dream Aspect's published starting prices, as of 5 October 2026, $10,000 buys up to three live-action shoots, up to 28 UGC videos, about 140 seconds of simple 2D animation, or up to 33 seconds of complex 3D:

  • Live-action shoots: up to 3, at $3,000 per shoot.
  • UGC videos: up to 28, at $350 per video, with a minimum order of 5 videos ($1,750).
  • Simple 2D animation: about 140 seconds, at about $70 per second on average.
  • Complex 3D animation: up to 33 seconds, at about $300–1,000+ per second, or 10 seconds or fewer at the top of that range.

Treat these as ceilings, not quotes. The shoot, UGC and 3D prices are starting prices, so the real amount you get will be lower, not higher; the 2D figure is an average and could go either way. Live action is priced per shoot, a half or full content day, not per video, so the number of videos depends on what the quote covers. UGC prices also depend on turnaround time, so ask whether a December deadline changes the rate. For complete examples, see three Q4 content budgets worked from published rates.

Does pay-on-scale ad production use up this year's budget?

Usually not. Under Dream Aspect's pay-on-scale ads model, you test ads in live campaigns without paying a license fee, and pay only for the ads you decide to scale. If testing starts in December 2026, the invoice may not arrive until 2027. That suits a 2027 budget, but it is the wrong product for money that disappears on 31 December. If you need both the work and the invoice in 2026, ask about licensing content outright instead.

Can you prepay a video agency in December for work in 2027?

Yes, if the agency agrees, and it can be the right move when the money has to leave in December but the brief isn't ready. A January shoot with a fixed date, agreed in writing and paid in December, is usually better than a rushed December one. Just remember that a prepayment buys a promise, not a video, so get four things in writing:

  • What you'll get, and when: without a delivery date, a prepayment is just credit.
  • Unused credit: what happens to it, and when it expires, because January plans change.
  • The invoice date: at payment or at delivery, since finance and your accountant may care about different dates.
  • When usage rights start: Dream Aspect's UGC page grants usage rights for typically six months but doesn't say when they start. Rights starting on 22 December would end around 22 June, so a video first posted in March would have half its term left.

Can a December 2026 prepayment for 2027 work be deducted in 2026?

It depends on whether your business uses cash or accrual accounting. This isn't tax advice, so confirm it with your accountant before you pay.

With cash accounting, IRS Publication 538 says a prepaid expense is deductible only in the year it applies to, unless it qualifies for the 12-month rule. Under the 12-month rule, you can deduct a prepayment now if the benefit doesn't run past whichever comes first: 12 months after it starts, or the end of the next tax year, which is 31 December 2027 for a calendar-year business paying in December 2026. If your business doesn't already use the rule, the IRS says you need its approval first.

With accrual accounting, the 12-month rule usually doesn't help. The regulation's own example is a company that prepays an advertising and marketing firm for a full year of services the following year, and the payment can't be deducted in the year it's made, unless a separate recurring-item exception applies. The reason is that, for services, the expense counts when the work is done, not when you pay.

The exception worth asking your accountant about is the 3½-month rule in 26 CFR 1.461-4. If you can reasonably expect the work to be done within 3½ months of paying, you may be allowed to count the expense when you pay. A payment on 15 December 2026 runs to about the end of March 2027, which could cover a January 2027 shoot.

Is spending leftover budget at year end a mistake?

Not automatically, but rushed year-end spending has a track record. In a 2017 study of US federal spending in the American Economic Review, economists Jeffrey Liebman and Neale Mahoney found that "Spending in the last week of the year is 4.9 times higher than the rest-of-the-year weekly average, and year-end information technology projects have substantially lower quality ratings." That is government IT, not marketing, but the pressure is the same: a deadline that rewards spending over judgement. So the first question for finance is whether the money can roll over into 2027.

A December video is the wrong call if you can't brief it well by early December. Dream Aspect locks creative direction before the shoot day, so a 14–17 December shoot needs a finished brief in the first half of the month. Speaking as the seller, a shoot booked only to use up budget is usually the worst value we make, because the brief is written last and judged first. If the money rolls over and you're weighing a hire instead, see the cost of an in-house social team against an agency.

What should you ask before booking year-end video?

Settle two short lists before 31 December 2026: one with the agency, about dates and terms, and one with your accountant, about tax.

Ask the agency:

  • What's the last booking date for a 14–17 December shoot?
  • Do you count calendar days or working days, and when do you close for the holidays?
  • What does "full content delivery" include, and is there a revision round?
  • When do you invoice, and what are your prepayment and credit terms?
  • When does the usage-rights period start?

Ask your accountant:

  • Are we on cash or accrual accounting?
  • Do we already use the 12-month rule, or would we need IRS approval?
  • Could the 3½-month rule apply to this payment?
  • Do we use the recurring-item exception?
  • Does our budget policy follow the tax treatment?

The tax points cover federal rules only, not state tax or fiscal years that don't end on 31 December.

Frequently asked questions

Is it too late to order video in December 2026?

Not for every format. Based on Dream Aspect's published production times, a live-action shoot on 14–17 December still delivers files by Christmas Eve, and simple 2D animation can start as late as 19–22 December. Complex 3D CGI is the exception: it takes two weeks to a month, so it needs to start by 24 November, and no later than 10 December.

What is the last day to shoot live-action video for delivery by 31 December 2026?

To be safe, shoot by 14–17 December, which delivers files by Christmas Eve. Live-action delivery typically takes 7–10 days after the shoot, so a shoot on 21–24 December only reaches 31 December if the team keeps working through Christmas week. Ask your agency whether it does before you count on it.

How many UGC videos does $10,000 buy?

Up to 28, at Dream Aspect's starting price of $350 per video. The minimum order is five videos, so the smallest purchase is $1,750. Treat 28 as a ceiling rather than a quote, because the price also depends on the creator, the script and the turnaround time.

Can I deduct a December prepayment to a video agency this year?

It depends on your accounting method, and this isn't tax advice. For cash-method businesses, IRS Publication 538 says a prepaid expense is deductible only in the year it applies to, unless it qualifies for the 12-month rule. For accrual-method businesses, prepaying an agency for next year's services usually isn't deductible in the year you pay. Ask your accountant about the 3½-month rule.

Does pay-on-scale ad production use up this year's budget?

Usually not. With Dream Aspect's pay-on-scale model, you test ads without paying a license fee and pay only for the ads you scale, so a December start may not produce an invoice until 2027. That suits next year's budget, not money that expires on 31 December.

What is the fastest video to produce before year end?

Simple 2D animation. A 7–12-second piece takes about 2–5 days, so it can start as late as 19–22 December and still arrive by Christmas Eve. With less than a week left, re-editing footage you already own is usually a better use of the money than a new production.
