The December Holiday Content Calendar 2026: Last Shoot Dates for Hanukkah, Christmas and New Year

The December Holiday Content Calendar 2026: Last Shoot Dates for Hanukkah, Christmas and New Year

Hanukkah starts seven days after Black Friday in 2026. This calendar gives the last live-action shoot dates for Hanukkah, USPS gifting, Christmas and New Year, when to post each one, and which formats still work if you are late.

When should you shoot December holiday content in 2026?

For live action, shoot 7–10 days before the content has to be live, and publish at least three days before the holiday itself. Dream Aspect's video marketing page says "Full content delivery typically takes 7-10 days after the content shoot day." Counting back from each 2026 holiday moment gives four last-shoot windows, from 21–24 November for Hanukkah to 19–22 December for New Year.

Last live-action shoot dates for December 2026:

  • Hanukkah (live by 1 December): shoot 21–24 November.
  • USPS Ground Advantage gifting (live by 14 December): shoot 4–7 December.
  • Christmas Day (live by 22 December): shoot 12–15 December.
  • New Year's Day (live by 29 December): shoot 19–22 December.

The earlier date in each range is the safer one; the later date assumes the fastest end of the production window and no delays. None of these dates include booking the shoot, your approval rounds, legal review or extra paid-social cuts, so if your project needs any of those, shoot earlier.

When is Hanukkah in 2026, and why shoot it before Thanksgiving?

Hanukkah 2026 begins at sundown on Friday 4 December and ends at nightfall on Saturday 12 December, according to Hebcal's 2026 Hanukkah calendar. Thanksgiving falls on Thursday 26 November 2026, per the OPM federal holiday calendar, so Hanukkah begins just seven days after Black Friday. In 2025 it began on 14 December, with far more room, so a brand that copies last year's calendar can easily end up late.

Hanukkah content should be live by 1 December. Counting back Dream Aspect's 7–10-day live-action window puts the last shoot on 21–24 November, before Thanksgiving. If you are shooting Black Friday in October or early November, capture Hanukkah assets in the same cycle; our Black Friday content calendar has those dates. If Black Friday is already shot, repurpose that footage rather than organising a new shoot after Thanksgiving.

Why post holiday content three days before the deadline?

Because most of an Instagram post's reach arrives in its first three days. Metricool's 2026 Instagram research says "70% of total views on Instagram happen in the first three days." Content posted on the holiday itself gets much of its reach after the moment you wanted to influence. Metricool's figures by format:

  • Reels: about 65% of views and 61% of interactions in days 1–3, and roughly 30% of lifetime views on day one, per Metricool.
  • Static posts and carousels: about 76% of views and 75% of interactions in days 1–3, and roughly 44% of lifetime views on day one, per Metricool.

Treat three days as a planning buffer, not a law. Metricool measured organic posts from January and February, not December holiday content, and we found no experiment showing that posting exactly three days earlier increases December sales. For more margin, post five days early.

What are the USPS holiday shipping deadlines for 2026?

For delivery before 25 December in the contiguous United States, USPS's 22 September 2026 holiday shipping release recommends these send-by dates, USPS's current guidance as of 5 October 2026. They are recommended dates, not delivery guarantees:

  • Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail: Thursday 17 December.
  • Priority Mail: 18 December.
  • Priority Mail Express: 19 December.

When should you shoot content for the Ground Advantage gifting deadline?

By 4–7 December, if your customer order deadline lands around 17 December. The date that matters is your customer order cutoff, not the USPS date: gifting content should be live three days before it, by 14 December, and Dream Aspect's 7–10-day live-action window, per its video marketing page, puts the shoot on 4–7 December. If your warehouse needs two days to process an order before USPS receives it, the customer cutoff moves to about 15 December, content goes live around 12 December, and the shoot moves to about 2–5 December.

When should Christmas and New Year content be shot in 2026?

Shoot Christmas Day content on 12–15 December and New Year content on 19–22 December. Christmas Day falls on Friday 25 December 2026, according to the OPM federal holiday schedule, so Christmas content should be live by 22 December. New Year's Day 2027 falls on Friday 1 January, so fresh-start content should be live by about 29 December. For January itself, see the New Year's resolution content calendar. One shoot on 12–15 December can often capture last-minute Christmas content plus New Year or self-purchase content to hold for later, which is usually more efficient than two shoots a week apart.

What changes after the final Christmas shipping deadline?

The message changes, not the need for content. Before the shipping deadline, December content is mostly about gifting. After it, Meta's holiday marketing guidance describes late December and New Year as a "fresh start" phase centred more on self-purchase. The audience can still buy; the reason for buying changes. Messages that fit after the deadline:

  • “Buy it for yourself” offers.
  • New Year routines, personal goals and January preparation.
  • Product upgrades.
  • Digital or instantly delivered offers.

Which content formats are fastest if you are already late?

Simple 2D animation and re-edits of footage you already own. Dream Aspect's published production times, on its CGI page and video marketing page as of 5 October 2026, are:

  • Simple 2D animation: about 2–5 days for a 7–12-second piece, per the CGI page.
  • Moderate 2D or basic 3D: about 5–10 days, per the CGI page.
  • Live action: typically 7–10 days after the shoot day, per the video marketing page.
  • Complex 3D or animated VFX: roughly two weeks to one month, per the CGI page.

If you need content inside one week, re-editing footage you already own may be more realistic than a new production, because a new shoot adds scheduling, crew, location and post-production time.

When is complex 3D CGI too late for December?

Complex 3D is the slowest format, at roughly two weeks to one month on Dream Aspect's CGI page. For complex 3D live by 14 December, the approved brief may need to be ready between about 14 and 30 November; for Christmas content live by 22 December, between about 22 November and 8 December. More scenes, products, simulations, lighting, VFX, rendering and revision rounds all push those dates earlier.

Why is UGC missing from the December production calendar?

Because Dream Aspect's published UGC timelines are not consistent enough to support a precise planning date: one published reference gives a broader production window, while another says some delivery can happen more quickly. Get the UGC delivery date in writing before you book for a December deadline.

What do these December production dates leave out?

Quite a lot. Dream Aspect's 7–10-day live-action figure starts at the shoot day, so it does not necessarily include these, and each one can move your real deadline earlier:

  • Booking crew, casting and locations, and pre-production.
  • Internal approvals and legal review.
  • Paid-media variants, extra aspect ratios and caption versions.
  • Reshoots and holiday staff availability.

Paid campaigns need the most extra time, because cutdowns, captions, approvals and media setup come after the first assets arrive, so brief ad variations during the original shoot. When you ask for a production quote, don't ask only “How long does production take?” Ask “What is the last day we can book, shoot, approve, and still publish on time?”

What if we use UPS, FedEx, in-store pickup or gift cards?

Then your gifting calendar may run later than the USPS dates. This December calendar is based on USPS and does not establish 2026 deadlines for UPS or FedEx. Brands with same-day or local delivery, in-store pickup, digital gift cards or instant digital products can often keep gifting campaigns running later into December, so plan against your actual customer purchase deadline instead.

Key takeaways

  • Hanukkah 2026 begins at sundown on Friday 4 December, seven days after Black Friday, so the last live-action shoot for content live by 1 December is 21–24 November.
  • USPS recommends sending by 17 December for Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail delivery before 25 December in the contiguous US; content for that deadline needs a 4–7 December shoot.
  • Shoot Christmas Day content on 12–15 December and New Year content on 19–22 December 2026.
  • Post at least three days before each moment: Metricool found about 65% of Reel views arrive in days 1–3.
  • Every date assumes live-action delivery 7–10 days after the shoot day and excludes your own approvals, so the earlier date in each range is safer.

Frequently asked questions

When is Hanukkah 2026?

Hanukkah 2026 begins at sundown on Friday 4 December and ends at nightfall on Saturday 12 December, according to Hebcal's 2026 Hanukkah calendar. That is only seven days after Black Friday; in 2025 Hanukkah began on 14 December, with far more room. For content live by 1 December, the last live-action shoot falls on 21–24 November, before Thanksgiving, so capture Hanukkah assets during the Black Friday production cycle.

What is the last day to ship Christmas gifts by USPS in 2026?

17 December for Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail, 18 December for Priority Mail and 19 December for Priority Mail Express, for delivery before 25 December in the contiguous United States, according to USPS's 22 September 2026 holiday shipping release. These are recommended send-by dates, not delivery guarantees. If your fulfilment team needs time between the customer order and carrier handoff, your customer cutoff must be earlier.

When should holiday content be shot for Christmas 2026?

By 12–15 December for Christmas Day, so it can publish by 22 December, and by 4–7 December for Ground Advantage gifting, so it can publish by about 14 December. Both dates use the 7–10-day live-action delivery window on Dream Aspect's video marketing page and exclude your own approval rounds, legal review and extra paid-social cuts, so the earlier date in each range is the safer one.

Is it too late to make holiday video content in December?

Not necessarily; it depends on the format and the deadline. Dream Aspect's CGI page puts simple 2D animation at about 2–5 days for a short piece, and live action typically takes 7–10 days after the shoot day. Complex 3D, at two weeks to a month, is much harder to start in December and still hit an early gifting deadline. Re-editing footage you already own is often the fastest route.

Why should holiday content post three days before the deadline?

Because most Instagram distribution happens early. Metricool's 2026 Instagram research found that about 65% of Reel views arrive in days 1–3, and posts and carousels get an even larger early share, so content posted on the deadline gets much of its reach afterwards. The three-day buffer is a planning rule, not a proven sales effect: Metricool measured January–February posts, not December holiday content.

Should Hanukkah and Christmas content be shot separately?

Usually not in 2026, but Hanukkah needs the earlier shoot. Because Hanukkah begins on 4 December, its content should be live by 1 December, which puts the live-action shoot around 21–24 November, inside the Black Friday production cycle or as a repurpose of Black Friday footage. Christmas and New Year content can often share a later shoot around 12–15 December.

What is the fresh-start phase?

The fresh-start phase is late December and the New Year, which Meta's holiday marketing guidance describes as centred more heavily on self-purchase. After the main gifting window, the creative should shift to New Year routines, upgrades, personal goals and “buy it for yourself” messaging. For New Year's Day 2027, on Friday 1 January, aim to have that content live by about 29 December.

Do these dates apply to paid ads as well as organic posts?

Not exactly. The shoot dates still matter, but paid campaigns need extra cutdowns, aspect ratios, captions, approvals and media setup after the first assets are delivered. The three-day posting buffer comes from Metricool's organic Instagram data, so it is not a paid-media rule. If paid distribution matters, brief the ad variations during the original shoot rather than adding them afterwards.
